Johnny Pohe work

So for this, we read an article about a guy named Johnny Pohe and about what he did in the airforce, then our teacher gave us some questions to answer :)

I think it was very interesting and I learned a lot.

PART 1: FOCUS ON DETAILS

“Johnny Pohe and the Great Escape” is a brief biography of Johnny Pohe. His story is told in sections.

In the chart, record THREE important details from each section.

SECTION HEADING

1.Johnny Pohe was of Te Āti Haunui-a-Pāpārangi and Ngāti Tūwharetoa descent.

2.Johnny was twenty-four and working on his family’s farm when the Second

World War started in September 1939.

were working on three tunnels: Tom, Dick,

and Harry.

“Penguins” and Bribery

1.One of the first challenges was getting rid of the soil that came out of the tunnel.

2.This work was done by “penguins” – men who scattered sand from small pouches sewn inside their trouser legs.

Escape

1. At 1 a.m., there was another hitch: the tunnel collapsed. The men worked desperately to repair it, and the escape continued.

My Quick write :)

Alone

Swaying trees cover the misty path. The moon shines upon a rock, making it more lively than ever. I run down the path in fright of what might be behind me. Suddenly a shadow appears from behind a dead tree. I hear my heart skip a beat. My legs start to shake, and my whole body goes numb. I try to retreat but as I do, my legs give out and I stumble to the ground. Losing all thought as everything turns black.

My eyes flicker open over time. The trees rock side to side above me as I stare up at the moon. I regained power in my legs, but my memory went blank. I crawl to my knees, using all my energy and effort. My whole body aches, it looks as if I had been dragged along a gravel road. Slash wounds cover my body, luckily not deep enough to end me. I gaze at my legs to make sure I'm still human. I think I am.

As I look around I nearly lose my breath. Two other people lay near me, spread out like dead animals. Except they were not animals but do seem dead. How did they get there? How did I get here? What happened?...

(By the way I haven't finished this yet because I ran out of time so I'm going to start writing a part two :3)

Tsunami Writing

This week with some of the work we received, we had to write about an image, which was based on a tsunami I think. This was the image, and below is my writing about it.

It was that time again… Our annual surfing trip to Raglan. While my parents packed up the suitcases and loaded up the car for the long journey ahead, we chatted excitedly about what an incredible holiday this was going to be!

Not too long into the journey, the beautifully clear, blue sky became dark and ominous. All of a sudden, crashing towards the long line of traffic, was a colossal wave – not the kind you’d want to catch on a board either…

Desperately, people raced wildly out of their cars, running, screaming, and panicking yet as I looked to my left, I saw a man… He stood there unfazed and sighed like he had been through this a million times. While others scrambled out of their cars, grabbing their loved ones. Tears were rising on most of their faces, yet this man was what I would've considered insane not to go hysterical at a time like this.

I found myself constantly looking at him, with a god-like stare. Yet he hadn't moved a muscle even though this was a life or death situation. The intensity coming from this man was too much to handle. It was like he would cause more damage than the actual wave itself. My eyes follow his glare which was not my intention. But I ended up doing it anyway.

A small group of sobbing people huddled beside a car door. Some praying, others in a tremendous state. But the man glared at them as if they had committed a terrible sin. I snarled when I saw him glaring at them. They had the right to be scared, so what was his problem?

Maybe this man was more satan-like than god-like...

Also, I didn't get to finish it so that probably why some of it doesn't make sense.

My Explanation On ¨Investigation On Wildfires¨

 Investigation On Wildfires

Wildfires are an environmental problem causing so many forests and places in the world to be burnt down. Wildfires are a huge problem because they release carbon dioxide  (Co2) into the atmosphere. But are also caused by so many other environmental problems.

Wildfires can occur anywhere. But they are most common in the forested area around the U.S and Canada. There are many different ways that wildfires can be caused. Like for example, unattended fires are a threat to the surrounding areas because it could spread easily. Making it even more harmful because it's unattended and could spread without anyone knowing.

It may not seem to be a big deal but when you throw a used cigarette out of a car window or anywhere, it may cause harm to the environment. For example if it's just only been used, and it is still hot. It could easily catch fire on things surrounding it. The same for campfires or firepits, after you've used them make sure you put them out. So that they don't cause harm to the environment around them. Also, this could affect your safety, if you don't have caution around the fire.

Over the years wildfire rates have gone up so much because of climate change. It affects wildfires so much because of the heat and change in the world. Climate change is one of the biggest reasons why wildfires are so much more common. The increase in temperature and drying of the planet makes it so much easier for a fire to start. Especially in Australia because most of it is dry grass and dead trees.

A way to reduce so many wildfires from happening is to take caution around what you're doing. When it could lead to environmental damage. You should also remember to put anything like cigarettes or highly flammable things into the rubbish/recycling. Not on the grass or on the side of a footpath.

In conclusion, wildfire rates have increased so much. But there are many ways that you could help to reduce so many wildfires from happening. Remember to take caution with what you do around fires and flammable things. So that you don't cause the environment any harm.

How A Political Party In NZ Wins An Election

How A Political Party In NZ Wins An Election

All of you should've heard of the words elections by now, and on the 17th of October, this year is New Zealand’s next election. Labour is currently one of New Zealand’s main parties with Jacinda Adern as our current Prime Minister.

In a general election, everyone over 18 gets to vote. They also get two votes under our voting system of MMP. An electorate vote and a party vote.  Parties try to get as many electoral votes and party votes as they can. Then the party with the most votes usually gets the most seats in parliament.

In an election you vote for the party you most want to represent you, which is where all people over 18 can vote for a local MP and any party that is in the elections. The amount of votes for a party increases the number of seats they'll have in parliament.

To get any seats in Parliament, a party needs to win at least 5% of the votes. Which means the more votes the better. To increase the votes, sometimes before the election parties and MPs try to get as many people as they can to convince the people to vote for them. For example, some people and parties put up signs in a spot where you can easily see them. And on the signs, they have some things they want to improve or their main policies.

In conclusion, these are all the things you need to know about how a party in New Zealand wins an election. When you turn 18 make sure you vote for the person who you think will represent you and your country the best.

The Causes And Consequences Of Water Pollution

Water pollution among the many other problems on Earth is a big one, as well as plastic and wildfires. Water pollution can happen anywhere on Earth, at any time, and can be caused by lots of things. That affects the water in many different ways.

Water pollution can be caused by many different things. For example, plastic waste is one of the main causes of pollution. Other types of human-made waste like oil tankers and other things can also pollute the water. You may have seen it on TV that some oil tankers spill into the ocean, causing pollution to the water and suffocating marine life.

Even though water pollution seems like a huge problem, there are lots of ways you can help to stop it. By throwing your plastic and other waste in the bin, you can stop the ocean from getting polluted by plastic. Another way you can stop water pollution is to help by not pouring any oil or cooking things down the sink. Because the oil could suffocate marine life since most sinks lead to the ocean.

The consequences of water pollution can kill lots of things including coral beds and big sea mammals, like whales. It also kills marine life and blocks waterways. When oil tankers leak, that's considered to be one of the most common ways to cause water pollution. After an oil leak the water is very unhealthy because of the pollution which makes it unable to drink because it would be unhealthy and probably poisonous.

In conclusion water pollution is a huge problem. If it gets any worse, all the water on Earth will be so bad that you won't be able to drink it. So in the long term, everyone will die.

Why Flooding Causes Destruction By Eva

 Why Flooding Causes Destruction

Flooding is usually caused by intensely heavy rains and sometimes even blocked water sources like drains, or connels. You've probably seen a flood before but have you ever thought about how much destruction it could cause.

Flooding can be an everyday thinking judging on the weather and the conditions. Most flooding happens when it's a high tide and the past week has been mostly heavy rains. It's just the same as drains, but sometimes the drain could get blocked with washed-up things like driftwood, leaves, and other stuff. Which causes problems with the road. But luckily every year the drains get dug out by the people in the roadworks business.

You're most likely to find a flood in a flat area beside a river. Many flat farms have problems with flooding because the stock banks aren't high enough to stop the water coming over. And depending on the water type, the grass will die. Especially if it's saltwater because the grass will slowly turn brown. And won't be any use to farmers and cattle.

Flooding can also be insanely dangerous. You've probably seen on TV, images of houses completely filled up with water. And neighborhoods being destroyed. That's all because of a flood! People can lose homes and lives because of flooding. And they can also cause landslides if the weather is bad. Because when it floods the water could cause creases in the ground. Then because of how wet and soggy the dirt is, the land above it will slide down. Because there's nothing to hold it in place.

In conclusion, flooding is naturally dangerous and can happen at all times. So make sure your stock banks are high enough that water doesn't come over and just rethink before you go building a house right near a river.

Persuasive Writing- Why we should eat more vegetables

Why We Should Eat More Vegetables
I think we should all eat vegetables.

Vegetables are good for our health. I eat vegetables and so should you! Lots of Veggies contain Vitamin A, which if you don't already know. Vitamin A is a group of “unsaturated organic compounds”.

In my opinion, all vegetables are really compelling and are a must for our health. Lots of people don't like vegetables but that's their loss. Some veggies are considered the healthiest food source in the world. For example, spinach is considered a superfood because of all the nutrients and the low calories it contains.

For this reason, I think we should all eat vegetables because they contain lots of vitamin A and C. Vitamins like A and C help our body in many ways, for example, vitamin A helps our normal vision in order for our eyes to work better. It also helps the immune system. All vitamins help our heart, lungs, kidneys, and other organs to function better. Unlike vitamin A, vitamin C is quite different. In the human body, vitamin C acts as an antioxidant. Helping to protect organ cells from damage, caused by free radicals.

Vegetables also help you to become fit and healthy. If you eat vegetables daily you will notice that you are better at the sport. That's because all the nutrients in it help you be fit. It will also help you lose weight and it could encourage you to try the vegetarian diet.

In conclusion, I think everyone should eat veggies every day because they make us really healthy. Even though they look gross and most broccolis reminds you of trees. They are actually great for our bodies. So that's why I think we should all eat our veggies.

What changed between WW1 and WW2

What changed between WW1 and WW2
WW1 and WW2 were constantly being fought over Land and rulership.
Even though many wars are the same there are many differences between
the two. During 1914 and 1945 these wars were continuously being fought.
And because of the impact of the first world war, many things have changed.

While WWI was fought in the trenches, by using machine guns and
poisonous gas to defeat the enemy. WW2 was much, much different. WW2
was fought using modern artillery and machines. They also used more
airplanes, ships, tanks, and submarines to attack the other side. In WW1
they used completely different weapons to defeat the enemy compared to
WW2. During WW2 they used a lot of machinery and air bombing.

Unlike WW1, WW2 didn't use trenches and there was a lot more deaths
because of this. During WW2 lots more people died because of the lack of
shelter and protection. But in WW1 they had trenches to protect their
soldiers. Even though the soldiers during WW2 didn't have as good
protection as the soldiers who fought in WW1. They didn't have to deal
with all the nasty diseases like trench foot and deadly gases that entered the
trenches.

WW2 was fought because of the German leader Adolf Hitler, who was
trying to take over the world. Unlike WW2, WW1 was fought because of
the attempted assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The reasons for
these two wars being fought are completely different. The reason they are
so different is because of the causes. Because of this, they used different
methods. For example, WW1 used trenches to their advantage and used gas
to defeat the enemy. The reason for them using this is because of the cause.
It was more like a plan of revenge, rather than a war.

In conclusion, now you can see why WW1 and WW2 are very different.
The way they used weapons and the methods they used to protect
themselves are not the same. Some had to deal with illnesses. Others sadly
just died of injuries in war.
